ah, well i would appreciate any insight. Seems like a simple subject, but i'm noticing that we here approach it mostly like "if i see any suffering, i will help to relieve it," and we are shielded, or just in denial, about the suffering we may cause.

Suffering IN OURSELVES produces hope, because it gives us the kind of experience God requires to make us candidates for the kind of people God wants to use. Look at David suffering in God's will under Saul to be made the man after God's own heart whom Israel needed as king.

But relieving the suffering of others does no such forming in us, because suffering causes breaking. And breaking in us removes the elements in our lives that hinder God from living through us. Suffering in others does not work anything IN US. Suffering IN US works something IN US.
