How is it that suffering produces hope (confident expectation),

3And not only that, but we also rejoice in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, 4endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope.

yet we are called to relieve suffering?

"feed and clothe the naked and hungry" etc.
