It was totally Anglicans. Herzl main objective was to convert Jews to Christianity. Wilberforce definitely wanted Jews to convert. All I ever read about the Society is their main thrust to convert Jews.

Society for the Promotion of Christianity Among the Jews also wanted to have converted Jews to return to Palestine. This was an old idea which goes way back to the 17th century. They believed that to hasten the return of Christ they needed to convert the Jews and place them back in the land of Palestine.

Yes, that was financed by the Drummond banking family of Scotland/England. They were the Crown bankers at the time, and Henry Drummond in the late 1700s and early 1800s financed Edward Irving and his Catholic Apostolic Church, and also helped Darby get going in the early 1800s. He also helped set up the Rothschilds in Britain around the same time frame.

Goes even back to Medieval times pilgrimages to Jerusalem. Then there is Menasseh ben Israel and Oliver Cromwell. To send Jews to Jerusalem. The British saw themselves as the true defenders of the faith, and that Jews had to convert to Christianity. What is interesting is that it almost worked until Don Issac Abravanel came up with his commentary on the book of Daniel. Where he has the two legs of Iron as the Western and Eastern Roman Church, and the Muslims. Which would eventually destroy each other in war, and finally the Jew would be victors over all the world, ushering in a golden age.
