I agree Ferd. Although I'm not part of the collective "we" in your post, I can see where some of the emphases have slipped a bit.

We can never go back but I do wish it was possible to move ahead with some of the same resolve and desire that was present decades ago. Wishful thinking I know.

It is true we can never go back, and often our memories of the past are somewhat rose-colored anyway. However, why is it mere "wishful thinking" that we proceed into the future with the same resolve, desire and unity? Surely that is God's will, so instead of resigning ourselves to its impossibility of implementation, how do we begin to make it come to pass?

I think the thing that changed it according to Howard Goss, was the influx of the strict Holiness guys, it changed the way that people fellowshipped and cooperated.

I believe it's God's will too but many don't. Not sure if that would be the majority or not. I hope not.

I'm all for the implementation of what I spoke of earlier.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day.....silks....satins.... jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducive in the early years.

It was not until long after, when former holiness preachers had become part of us that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

Although entire sanctification was preached at the beginning of the movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the holiness movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for what everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seeming never occurred to any of us."

Keith4him talking, it seems there has been a change since the early days, theoretically we believe in Finished work doctrine, but in practice there seems to be an emphasis that the Lord needs our help.

It dawned on me reading his book last week, most of the early holiness preachers believed in the 2nd work of Grace, or that someone had to be sanctified completely after justification. Well as a movement we don't believe that, but you know I think in practice that many still embrace this.

Though brought up UPCI, I was in the Church Of Our Lord Jesus Christ for 24 years...the older Saints used to testify, "I thank God that I'm Saved, Sanctified, and filled with the precious gift of the Holy Ghost...and that with fire!!"

Thanks for posting that...very interesting...

Honestly this was her opinion not necessarily his. She was the author.
