Re: I remember when...
This has got to be the all-time best thread- ever! I really enjoy reading everyones memories. Course, being outside the UPC loop, I don't know alot about who's who, the camps and all, but I've just enjoyed the little glimpses into the past. Some people, for waht ever reason, don't like to revisit the days of yesteryear, but, its really enjoyable.
I remember when I was real young living in Florida, they would show outdoor movies at the Opa-Locka City Park. One night we went, (this was the 50's) and they were showing one of those old Flying Saucer movies. Scary! The flying saucers made a WHOOP! WHOOP! sound, something like modern day police cars make. Anyway, the movie ended and we started walking home.
What we didn't know was that the movie was to be shown again. We got a block or so away from the park when the movie opened again. WHOOP! WHOOP! There was that sound again. It was "War of the Worlds" all over again. Talk about kids running everywhere, screaming and crying!
Radio preachers were a big part of my early Christian life. Some of the preachers we'd listen to were: Don Stewart (A.A.Allen had died a few months before), RW Schambach, Rev. Ike, RG Hardy (He is and looks exactly the same as back then), David Epley, David Nunn, W.V.Grant. Listened to Harvestime some (but it couldn't compete with "The Blind SEE!, the Deaf HEAR!, the lame WALK!") Use to listen to Rev. Ike to hear what his latest gimmick was.

Re: I remember when...
I was raised around Pentecost- And I am older than dirt - So here goes
My first visit to the LA Campgrounds was in 1970- There was no air conditioning, sawdust on the floor, and rough plank benches.
I remember when the bass at church was a bass fiddle on the platform.
I remember when there was an orchestra at church. Everyone who played in the band at school played in the church orchestra, favorite tunes were Good Bye World Good Bye, and the Jericho Road.
I remember when Youth Service was on Sunday afternoon, upstairs in the church and it was called the Upper Room.
I remember a bunch of us girls piling in the car to go to youth camp with Br. and Sis. Rigdon and the car broke down. A man picked up Br Rigdon and brought him to the closest filling station to get help with fixing the car.

My knowledge of Rev. Ike and RW Shambach didn't come till much later for me, but then I'm alot older than you.
In the 1950’s and early 60’s, there was no such thing as Christian television stations, and radio programming was limited for preachers.
Teachers like Oral Roberts (at that time, Assembly of God, later, Methodist), Billy Graham (Baptist), and Bishop Sheen (Catholic) bought airtime on secular television stations...cable had not been invented, there were just three networks, and the picture was often ‘snowy’.
And then there was Prophet Jones, from Detroit...what a character! He wore a full-length white mink coat, and one earring in his left ear...he didn’t want an earring to interfere with ‘messages’ from God that he claimed he heard in his right ear. He used to scare me nigh onto death!!
That was about it...Jimmy Swaggart and the others came later, in the late 60’s or early 70’s. The radio ministries were primarily on Sunday, and Christian literature was limited. There were a few books and reel-to-reel tapes by Kenneth Hagen (though we didn’t know it), and none by Kenneth Copeland, Fred Price, Joyce Meyers, or Bishop Jakes.

Blubayou, I think my dirt is older than yours!
My first time to go to youth camp in Louisiana was '57 or '58. I don't think Murrell and Joan were even married yet. For the camp choir, one of them played the organ and the other one played the piano. The thing that I remember most about Murrell is his red and striped tie, and red and white striped socks to match!
I wonder if he even remembers them? LOL

Heavens to Betsy...Goodbye World, Goodbye IS older than dirt!! Everybody and their granddaddy sang it.
Like you, I remember when the only bass in our church was the stand-up bass.
I remember when the only microphone we had was a table top ribbon mic.
I remember the annual Candle Light Service...can't remember why they had it...something about remembering when they moved from the old building with no electricity to the newer one.
I remember when everyone in the church drew names at Christmas, and our pastor gave out little bags of fruit and candy to the children.

Re: I remember when...
In the first Apostolic church that I belonged to, the baptistry was under the floor. There was a piece of wood that was laid over it. When you wanted to baptize someone, you had to pull the carpet back off of the baptistry and then lift up the wood and lean it against the wall.
We also had to walk across the platform if you needed to use the restroom during the service because the only door to the back of the church was by way of the backside of the platform.
We had youth service on Friday nights. One Friday night we had a family who had been given several parts to do during the service, but they never showed up. Everyone was upset with them for flaking out on us. Until after the whole service was over. That's when the sheriff showed up to tellus that when the mom was on her way to church with all 7 of their kids in the car, plus one neighbor kid, she lost control of the car and crashed into a tree, killing everyone instantly. The dad was at work that night, so he was the only survivor in the whole family. What a lesson we learned that night in not pre-judging

Re: I remember when...
I remember little "church" banks with the steeple.
I remember bringing a penny for every year of your age on the Sunday nearest your birthday. And marching to the front while the congregation sang: A happy birthday to you - a happy birthday to you - may you feel Jesus near every day of the year. A happy birthday to you - a happy birthday to you and the best year you've ever had."
I remember the 30 pieces of silver cardboard offering holders that you turned in on Easter Sunday.
I remember Mother Haney's Tuesday morning Ladies Prayer group.
I remember Grandma Nonie.
I remember getting towels in laundry detergent
I remember getting glass dishes in the oatmeal box.
I remember when the prize in cracker jacks was really something exciting.
I remember Double Spring Cemetery and the history it holds for the church in Stockton.
I remember Monkeyman's dad singing "My God is Real"
and Raven, I remember Deliah tempting Sansom into revealing just enough....

Re: I remember when...
and what was it called? march for missions? no, that doesn't sound right. The 20 mile walk we did to raise money for Sheaves for Christ. THAT was a killer day every year!
