they could have cancelled General Conference for just ONE year to help their budget crisis....

what really happened at Conference that couldnt have been accomplished through mailings and or a conference call?

Or even put off for one more year?

They could have made up their deficit.

Walk the halls at WEC....scan the parking lot. Listen to the coversation.

You think the cuts are across the board?

of course not.

it's being handled incorrectly and they are not UPS or Enterprise Rent a Car, they are a ministry and supposed to be reaching a lost and dying world.....what happened to faith? What happened to trusting God?

Did they outsource that too?

It's not a good time for a lot of people. For sure.

Again, I apologize for making light of the situation. I wasn't paying close attention to the thread and should have before responding!
the difference here is PPH/WEC is a ministry - or supposed to be.

It's not a for profit business.

And their first reaction is to cut 13 jobs of long time, tenured UPC folks?

just throw these folks to the wolves...but they keep the PPH functions, they just OUTSOURCE them....

it's NOT right.

I see that it's non-profit, but it still costs to run things. I'm sure they are trying to save money by the outsourcing. It's just they way it happens.

I'm sorry for the families involved, but I do know what it takes to try and keep a business afloat - profit or non - it's hard. You scratch, pull, scrimp and sometimes you go under.

I'm not taking up for them, but sometimes business is business.

I pray for the families involved!

it wouldnt be so bad if their cuts were consistent. They make some of the craziest business decisons. Their priorities are WAY out of whack.

You'd have to see it in action I guess to see how one sided it is....

in this case its not just business. Things havent been right at WEC for awhile now...

You are right. I would have to see it. I can get very frustrated when things are unorganized, so I hear you on that.

when they can raise 28 MILLION dollars for I think foreign missions in a year, which I know foreign missions requires a lot of money to operate....surely they can figure out some way to save JUST 13 JOBS?!?!?!

I know its not that simple but there are other things not right about their decisions.....

my biggest question is where is the accountability? Who is making these decisions? Based on who's direction?

I hope it gets all worked out somehow, Theresa. Sorry for the 13 jobs losses. And, again, I apologize for getting involved when I didn't understand and it clearly wasn't any of my business.

Re: More Employee Layoffs at PPH

I think the UPC executive hierarchy is having a hard time adjusting to the fact that UPC growth is pretty much nil and there are not near the funds coming into the national HQ there were back in my salad days; at least when you adjust for inflation.

One of the sacred cows does seem to be the bloated, high-salaried fat-cat executive positions.

I really think the expense of running headquarters could be adjusted well by eliminating a Director of Promotions position in one or more of the departments and just let the departmental director and secretary run things.

But again ... those cushy executive jobs with big expense accounts seem to be sacred cows.

Now this is just an idle, musing observation by me.

The pastor of this church - obviously in the St. Louis area - must not have much political stroke.

I know some area pastors that would be down on Dunn Road kicking and screaming bloody murder if 10-13 of their tithe payers were put out of work at one time by the UPC headquarters.

Re: More Employee Layoffs at PPH

I'm not surprised about the cuts...I'm sure there will be more soon.

Sad day...

I am sorry for the 13 people who are losing or have lost their job. Business is slow around the world and while I understand it's a ministry, sometimes business decisions must be made within the ministry. It's sad that they've had to do this...that there isn't enough funds available...I too wonder where the accountability is, but I do agree with Tim...wonder who the pastor is and why they thought it was okay to cut 13 people from the same church....things that make you go ummmmm....
