Re: How did you propose marriage?

I rented (sort of - a friend owned it and sailed it for us) a 40 ft yacht and took Kristin out on the lake. I had prepared a picnic dinner complete with NA bubbly and hid the ring in my sock - so she would not find it.

I had our favorite easy listening station on and at the perfect time "our song" came on - Sunshine on My Shoulders

.

She broke her curfew that night...

My wife and I met the last day of 1979 and into the first day of 1980.

We visited Milw to visit a pastor friend of my dad.

A church he preached at some 50 times in the mid 1970's.

My father passed away in 1978 so the pastor Frank Tamel invited us to visit.

When we arrived at the pastor's house after a long drive from Cincinnati to Milwaukee.

I met who today is one of my closest friends.

I spent the next few nights at their house.

He showed me picture of a girl who at the time was 14, I was 15.

It was really kind of weird when I looked at her picture.

I will look to post it before this thread moves on.

He told me she did not have a boyfriend, but was a very sweet girl.

I took from what he shared with me that he liked her...

So I was introduced to her, at that watch night service, by her brother Mike Taylor.

She walked up to me with a gray dress and perfect hair.

She put out her hand first and with a shy voice said, "Hi I am Ann Taylor".

I then said, "I am Nathan Eckstadt".

It seemed like everyone in the building was looking at me.

In reality no one was watching us.

I then called her a few times on the phone over the next couple of months.

We visited again in Feb 1980 and I spent a few hours talking with her.

So then we moved to Milw and I went to the church school.

It was then over the next few years we spent time with mutual friends.

I just continued to think about her over those years.

She then went off to JCM in the fall of 1984.

She then went to live with her brother in Maryland in the summer of 85.

She came back to visit that summer and she came by the church on a Saturday morning.

Where I was playing on one of the church softball teams.

She walked over to me and asked how I was doing?

I asked if she wanted to get something to eat later that night?

She said yes and we went out and spent the evening together.

She then came back in October and we went out once again.

She moved back around Christmas of 85.

We went out again on Feb 14th 1986.

On night while sitting at a Pizza hut, I made a comment in passing.

I said something like this in response to a comment she made,

"I think it would be cool to be married to you"!

We continued to talk for another 30 minutes or so.

As we walked to the car, we looked at each other and that was the moment of the kiss! (Still brings back a great memory).

We got into the car and she slid over next to me.

Before all the laws in this country, remember the bench seat in cars?

She whispered in my ear, "Yes"!

I looked at her and said, "yes to what"?

She said, "yes"! I will marry you!

I just looked at her for a long while, then responded "Are you serious"?

She said, "yes"!

So we went back to her house and talked to her mom.

Her dad worked 2nd shift and did not get home until after midnight.

I think half the wedding was planned that night.

When I got home at 3:AM, I got in trouble for being out so late.

Until I told my mom and then we stayed up until 5...

I then hid my wife's wedding ring, with the help of her mom in her bedroom.

I gave it to her at Easter time.

She was so mad that it was in her room all along!

We dated offically for 5 weeks before our engagement.

We knew each other for 6 years.

We got married Dec 27th, 1986.

It has been a great 22 year run...

Sorry for the long story.

Serious.

We both met, dated (very briefly) and started planning the Vegas wedding without ANY official proposal. It just sort of "happened".
"Never happened."

"But it did! I was there. This old man said 'man and wife.'"

"Did you say 'I do'?"

"Uh, no, we sort of skipped that part."

That is one of the most romantic proposals I have ever heard.

By just a little actually - our "caption" had to torque the sailboat off a shallow bar. Her parents never did believe it I don't think!
