The Boston Cop will be disciplined and likely lose his job for this. Rightly so.
Too bad a place like Harvard does not rise to the standards of character for their faculty as required by lower status police officers.

Now, I am amazed that this Boston cop got so upset about this incident that even days afterwards he was unable to control himself. He is on leave for this gem of a letter that he wrote and sent to a columnist. Among the wonderful things he had to say about the incident:
“His first priority of effort should be to get off the phone and comply with police, for if I was the officer he verbally assaulted like a banana-eating jungle monkey, I would have sprayed him in the face with OC deserving of his belligerent non-compliance.”
“He indeed has transcended back to a bumbling jungle monkey, thus he forever remains amid this nation’s great social/racial divide…”
“Gates is a *********** fool and you the article writer simply a poor follower and maybe worse, a poor writer. Your article title should read CONDUCT UNBECOMING a JUNGLE MONKEY-BACK TO ONE’S ROOTS"
Of course he later cleaned it all up when he said "“I regret that I used such words. I have so many friends of every type of culture and race you can name. I am not a racist.”
I personally think that we can use this as a learning tool. Is there a problem with racism including police officers? Yes. Is every situation that is thought to be about race really about race? No.
The problem is that in many places, the problem is so prevalent that there will be times when the accuser may be off. I think that this officer's description of how he would react to being disrespected by a "jungle monkey" is not unique to only him.
Let's be clear with this ... the racist officer who wrote this email is NOT the same officer who arrested the racist scholar.
The Boston Cop will be disciplined and likely lose his job for this. Rightly so.
Really? Lose his job for getting stupid and writing a racist rant. If he used department resources, then yes, he should be disciplined and rightfully suspended ... but there have been cops who have done worse and who have kept their jobs.
Again, he was absolutely wrong for writing the email - it's detesting what he wrote. But there's no law against being stupid ... or even racist. Ask Gates.
The officer should be suspended indefinitely without pay and required to take courses on profiling and race relations. And he may need to submit to his record being reviewed over the next year. But he shouldn't be forced out of his job simply because the Mayor or PD wants to look tough in light of the Gates controversy.

JMO ... likely not the most popular one, I know.
I think law enforcement needs a high standard (as should upper tier faculty in prestigious universities.)and I think the Boston officer should be disciplined. They will likely fire him and I support their right to do so. It need not end his career in law enforcement - if as you point out he makes an effort towards sensitivity in these matters. At any rate it will look horrible on a resume and he will pay for his foolishness.
Your point is made though. These events all end up being glaring examples of a double standard by the time the PC crowd, media, and Jessee Jackson get through with them.
