If they don't deserve a reward....why should they get a tip?
A basic tip should be left simply for service. Even if a waitress isn't 100% cordial, she is still serving you your food and drinks, and tending to your needs--you aren't having to fetch them yourself. If the service is GOOD, or GREAT, the tip can be increased accordingly.

I agree.
And, if most think a decent tip is 10% then maybe that's why there's a bad rep out there!

He/she gets a wage for that basic service. It is not a big wage. That should serve to motivate them to do an excellent job or get a very small tip. If they fail to do a great job, they will have to learn to live with spare change for a tip.

I tip and tip well (usually)...but I still don't understand how the restaurant business managed to swing this sweet deal where they don't have to pay their employees like everybody else does. That is where the problem lies; with the notion that regardless of service I am forced to tip because in effect I am as responsible to pay your wages as your employer is.

I agree. I would rather tip a nurse that does things to service people than someone handing me a plate someone else cooked.
Just saying.....

I totally disagree. A waitress is paid a wage PLUS tips. He/She knows that how he/she performs is what determines the amount of tips he/she will earn. He/She better do it right regardless of whether he/she brought the food to the table or not - he/she knows this when they take this type of job.
You are also right on - "If the service is GOOD or GREAT, the tip can be increased accordingly."

There is a lot more to being a waiter or waitress than just handing somebody a plate. Try it for a few services.
People are very demanding and waitresses at any restaurant that is very popular work their proverbial butts off.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.
"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.
"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

I can't imagine being the waiter at a dinner or restaurant when a big group of apostolics walk in for their weekly after church lunch/dinner, KNOWING I am about the work my butt off for next to no tip.

i eat out alot ,single and i dont like to cook, plus i aint no cook, and clean up too i always tip well mostly 20 percent. its rarely the waitress problem if service is slow, its lack of staff and talent in the kitchen, not there fault! i also leave cash most of the time. the goverment gets more than there fair share imo . it makes up for the quarter droppers also, cant stand cheap skates! ie those who can afford to tip well and wont !
