The government pays for high school and kids excel there. It never costs them a penny. But all of a sudden when it comes to college all yall republicans expect the kids to somehow be able to afford the education. That's right you don't expect the kids to be able to afford college. Instead you expect them to have to borrow. That sounds kinda crazy to me... when the first thing you want to encourage an 18 year old kid to do is borrow thousands upon thousands of dollars. Surely there is a better way?
say what? I pay many thousands of dollars for public high school. It is far more expensive than private or homeschooling.

He means it's paid for through the tax system. But, then again, you knew that.

Your yearly school taxes are thousands of dollars? Or is that a lump sum number?

Re: College Education an Entitlement?

My kids are some brilliant kids. I have one in college. But I told her years back that she had better work on getting scholarships because I can't afford to send anyone to college.

She did just that. Worked hard and did what she needed to do to qualify for scholarships. She is in college now and has all the scholarships she needs to go to college all four years and she is only $400 per year short of paying for the whole thing (including 2 meal per day meal plan).

I'm happy to cover the $400 per year. So when she graduates... no loans to pay.

I admire all those who worked or whose kids are working to pay for college. It's not easy.

All I'm saying is...there's another way.

All this talk about free food and housing is a straw man argument and outside of the scope of the point I'm trying to make.

Yes sir. On my post... I was just saying...

But, as I have stated before, I think we get way off the mark in this country in the entitlements that people get but I think that education is a legitimate government area should the people vote it to be so. No one argues that grades k-12 are legitimate governmental areas.

I find it interesting that it is such a matter of fact thought that the first 12 years of education is paid for. And then it is viewed as reprehensible that the other 4 be paid for. (in most cases 4 years)

Like I have said... I'm not "for it". But it is one area of governmental expenditure that I could see it as being beneficial for the nation as a whole.

Re: College Education an Entitlement?

Isn't it the policy of many nations that you can go to college for free, if you're smart enough to get into that college?

I think this would be the most appropriate way to do things, even here in the USA-- public and private schools alike.

Make college entrance more competitive and give everyone else access to other feasible options where they can still be productive members of our society.

Sometimes people just don't know, or they forget.

Don't make this a republican issue. There are republicans that see the value in overhauling the education system too. The concept of school choice and charter schools are not hallmarks of the democrat party by any stretch of the imagination.

Great post.

I would only say that I think that the private colleges should be able to charge what they wish - they are a privilege, not a right. I think eventually the free market would establish reasonable (whatever that means) prices for private education.

So why don't you go to college?
