Under communism... all things are possible
People that don't go to college and parents with out kids share the cost of education.

Personally I think everything should be free...it would be nice. But ultimately things cost money.
So if you give away an education for free to someone, it's still not really free. States, cities or even Countries have to pay for it somehow and that somehow is taxes and fees on other stuff.
|
I'm aware of that. And that's fine. If people don't have to pay $500/month in loan payments because they went to college, then maybe they can pay an extra $50 toward free education. They still come out ahead.
This idea that we shouldn't have to pay taxes puzzles me...where do we think the money to run the country is going to come from, exactly? The point is, to use it wisely and minimize waste. I fail to see how educating the majority of the population is wasting money.

No one's talking about communism, coadie...you're the one that keeps bringing up Cuba. There are many other countries with free university education that aren't communist.

But, why would this be true for education only?
Seriously, wouldn't the country be better off if the majority were given free food and housing too?

Our loan payments between my wife and I are 1500 a month. I also went to school with many kids who dropped out after the first few months to year because their daddies were paying for their tuition and they had no reason to excel in class.
Why do I have to pay for kids who don't give a rip how they do because someone else is paying for it?

Who said we shouldn't have to pay taxes?
The point was, any place where college is free, someone is bearing the burden of paying for it. In other words, it's not really free.
The more "free" stuff people demand, the more they will have to pay out of their income in taxes.
Who said educating the majority of the population is wasting money?

Yall actually think that kids do bad in school because they don't have to pay for it? Personally, I think most do much worse in school when they are trying to work 40 hours a week and go to school...
The government pays for high school and kids excel there. It never costs them a penny. But all of a sudden when it comes to college all yall republicans expect the kids to somehow be able to afford the education. That's right you don't expect the kids to be able to afford college. Instead you expect them to have to borrow. That sounds kinda crazy to me... when the first thing you want to encourage an 18 year old kid to do is borrow thousands upon thousands of dollars. Surely there is a better way?

I agree with this. I'm not saying what I did for my kids is necessarily a better way, but it allowed them to attend college without being drowned in debt when they graduated. I planned for their college education and set money aside so there wouldn't be a need for loans. It's my opinion that the parents are responsible for their child's higher education. It's not the child's and certainly not the goverment's responsibility.
Now before anyone takes me to task for offering my kids a free ride, they're not getting one. My kids are responsible for obtaining a part time job while attending college and paying for various small items: cell phone, car costs (insurance, gas, minor maintenance like oil changes, etc.). Requiring them to pay for some of these costs teaches them responsiblity while also teaching them the value of a dollar.
Again, not saying my way is the better or right way, just saying it's one way of doing it that doesn't result in massive student loans.
