What I had in mind was something on wheels, and levelers for the rods. They would be free to spin whichever way they "wanted" to.

...and something that travels entirely by remote control so there is NO human contact. Basically a 100% robotic dowser.

Of course the excuse for it not working will be something about no human being present to complete the Earths magnetic circuit or something.
