I agree that the music trends in the OP churches seems to have gone down a road that seems more entertainment-based than worship driven. Basically when the musician, singers, and crowd all enjoy entertaining, and being entertained, it is hard for the spirit of God to move in that element. I don't remember hearing chanting per se in the singing in the OP, but definitely remember lots of repetition, and many of the new songs were just a catchy phrase repeated over and over.
Music and worship are tricky things. When you have incredibly skilled people as musicians/singers, it is an area that Satan can use to his advantage, and instead of the music drawing people to worship the Lord, music can actually be used as a tool by the enemy by which pride in the heart of the skilled musician/singer is offensive to the moving of the spirit.
So... just to say that a certain genre or style of music is a deterrent to true worship taking place, I think that pointing fingers at a style of music needs to be taken one step further. If the musician is truly intending to honor, and worship the Lord with their musical talents and abilities, I believe the spirit of the Lord will bless and there will be a sweet presence of the Lord (for the most part). But if entertainment and perfection becomes the name of the game, and gimmicks, and different man-made elements are used to try to usher in worship.... it most likely won't accomplish its goal, and will remain just pure entertainment.
