They had "standards", like if you were seen at the theater or colisseum you were excommunicated and shunned, like women wore headcoverings, and like if anyone offered a pinch of incense to Caesar just to keep them and their family from being butchered they were disfellowshipped and in a great number of cases would NEVER be allowed back even if they claimed to have repented.
In fact, 90% of modern American Christians (of ANY "brand") would completely NOT fit in with any church of say 100 years ago, let alone 1800 years ago.
Not to mention the preachers would be considered waaaay too "mean".
