Here is what I have observed:
You take a normal human being ( a pastor) and make him leader over a group of people (church). You pay him a salary and give him a house. The pastor is responsible for leading and directing the church according to "the will of God". In traditional UPC churches, the pastor wants his approval for everything. Family vacations need to be approved by the pastor, your spouse needs to be approved by the pastor....the length of your skirt needs to be approved by the pastor...and etc.
It's common sense. If you give anyone that much power, it is hard to stay in the straight and narrow without abusing that power. I think it's interesting that pastors often relate standards to a business when trying to explain them. Basically, I believe the amount of power UPC churches give their pastors is harmful to the church and the pastor.
