I would rather discuss who Christ is than the Trinity.

The Nicene Creed came about over the issue of who Christ is. Those who formulated the Creed said that Christ, with regard to His divinity, was the same (divine) substance as the Father (this was in contrast to the teaching of Arius, who said Jesus was of similar substance as the Father). Other early Creeds were formulated to address the issue of who Christ is (Nestorius' diophysite teaching was adopted but Nestorius was condemned because of the way Cyril wrongly charcterized Nestorius' teaching; Eutychius' monophysite teaching was rejected).
