But... on the statement "when it comes to the Word of God, can't be bad" I would only point out the following.

In the word of God there was instruction given to make a brazen serpent. Later on that serpent had to be destroyed because the clamor over the symbol had superseded the instruction and intent behind it.

I think that we do need to recognize that symbols can take on a meaning and worth to us that is far beyond the intended use and purpose. As fleshly beings we have a propensity to latch onto symbols to the point that the symbols themselves bear as much worth as the truths they were intended to convey. It is simply demonstrated human nature that we have this tendency.

I am not casting judgment on anyone elses position in relation to these symbols. I am just stating that a blanket statement like the one I quoted above is, upon closer observation, not necessarily so.
Point well taken. However, my statement really doesn't fit with your comparison. They were not told that the serpent would be for a memorial. They were not instructed to keep the serpent. They sinned in making it an idol. It did not give them greater understanding of the word.

ANYTHING can lose its intended meaning and become something more or less than it was intended to be. I stand by my statement that something can't be bad that gives us greater understanding to the word of God.

I have never instructed a single person to affix a mezuzzah or to follow any of the ways of Judaism. Paul did not instruct anyone to leave the ways of Judaism nor did he ever forsake his Jewish roots by failing to practice his heritage. His heritage was made perfect by the Messiah, the spotless lamb, the High Priest, the Prince of Peace, the LORD God Almighty.

The study of the Rabbinic Judaism of Jesus' day is not only enlightening, but more clearly and truly reveals who Jesus was and is and how much He loved the people of His day. Jesus life and teachings fit into the framework of first century Rabbinic Judaism.....at least from everything I have studied for almost 20 yrs.
