This is kind of like the story of the lady who chopped off the edges of her roast beef because that is how she was taught. When asked why she did it, she decided to research it with her family. It turned out that it was a tradition passed down about five generations. With further research, she found out that her great great grandmother started chopping off the edges of the meat because she only had one small pan to cook the meat in. She had chopped off the edges so the meat would fit in the pan.
The tradition was passed down, but the reason for the tradition somehow got lost.
