I will have to refrain from dying of laughter if it turns out that the mammoth/elephant hybrid is sterile.

Couldn't they continue to use the cloning method to combine the developing species if the hybrid was sterile?

That might be best too... if they could ever get a 97% mammoth it would interesting to see but when you interject a new species into an environment with the ability to procreate you can cause a whole new set of problems.

That is exactly what they would do.

I am sure there are ways of predicting if the initial offspring will be sterile or not, but it would be hilarious if they were since it would throw just one more wrench into the Answers in Genesis crowd when talking about Noah's Ark and how there were FAR FEWER species back then.

I think you just had a revelation!! I too would like to see this of course out of curiosity. I was walking a creek two years ago and found a mammoth tooth.
It would of had BIG dental bills if it were around today.
