The soul is not a divisible part of a person.
Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life ; and man became a living soul.
A person does not 'have' a soul so much as a person IS a soul.
Your soul does not leave the body at death, rather the spirit leaves the body at death. Notice in Adam's case (whose image we bear at this present time) he was a physical body, which when the breath ('spirit') entered HE (Adam) BECAME a living soul.
A human body plus spirit = HUMAN SOUL.
When the person dies, the body returns to the earth, and the spirit returns to God.
In resurrection, the spirit returns to the body, which is transformed (see
1 Cor 15), and the person lives forever (in the case of the child of God).
In the case of the wicked, on resurrection they are judged, condemned, and executed by the Judgement of God, and are destroyed.
At that time, even death and the grave itself will be destroyed.
And the wicked will be no more remembered.
There are no dead people wandering the earth, except maybe in Hollywood.
