they symbiotic relationship is interesting.

The waste produced by the fish, in the tanks must be cleaned or the fish become toxic and die. So the plants are used to "scrub" the water. the waste become nutrients for the plants, cleaning the water for the fish.

it is quite interesting.

Im not going to ever do it, its pretty labor intensive, but if you are into sustainability for ecological or "prepper" reasons, it is a very solid way to go.
There is a "prepper" family not far from us who are raising Talapia in their swimming pool and using a small veggie garden as their biological filter. This system literally provides more then 90% (and could provide 98) of their food.

its really genius. just a lot of work. I mean it has to be your way of life.

As I understand it, you arent going to go on vacation and forget about it for a week or two...

It is and it isn't. As long as regular maintenance is being done it is possible for them to be self sustaining enough to leave for days or even a week or more at a time. My big aquarium (the 120 gallon one) is set on timers for the lights and food. I do hand feed them a number of different foods but we routinely leave for 4-8 days and they do just fine in that amount of time. The limiting factor for how long we can be gone is how fast the water evaporates. I lose nearly a gallon a day most days so after a week the water has lowered quite a bit.

Re: Gardeners quaphonics?

Fred, didn't like that statement lots of work.

It seems to have a lot of positives like no grass, no bending over killing your back.

But you do bring up a good point of not being able to leave for long periods of time.

Randy can't you get auto feeders and watering devices?

My concerns is weather. To hot or to cold for fish?
