The spirits in prison were preached to by Christ by the Holy Spirit in the days of Noah. Which means Christ preached to them by the Spirit through Noah (a preacher of righteousness), not that Christ preached to them after they and He died.
Paul looked forward to being with the Lord on resurrection day, he did not look to become a disembodied spirit.

Ok there are verses were Paul looked forward but that doea not explain verses were e see:
1 Pet.4: 6
For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
Also look:
but quickened by the Spirit:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20 Which sometime were disobedient,
It speaks about Christ who went and preached to the spirits .
Also there are many verses like the thief on the cross ,Jesus told him
"today you will be with me in Paradise"
Paul said:
23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:
Paul having the desire to
depart and be with the Lord does not speak about the future glory that speaks to other verses,
that speaks about spirit living the body "decease" and
there are many many verses also at Revelation were dead saints are waiting till resurrection
So i dont want to make any doctrine about that, i maybe mistakenly see those verses, but i am sure there is a place for the souls.
That does not make sense to some, because they ask "what the point then with the Resurrection'?
I dont know! I know only that Resurrection is when soul/spirit come back to a glorified body etc.

All kind of spirits ,devils, angels, etc. even the Holy One, operates to life through a body or through men, now imagine that man is not just a "living soul" like any animal, but has a spirit! Spirits are eternal beings and we are too.
demons want a "home to rest" and they camoe to men! Otherwise feel bad "in dryness" of Abysos.
Some spiritual beings (Angels that sinned and left their first estate)are in prison too! they wait there till the final judgment..
God make His angels "spirits"
Satan took with him 1/3 of angels!
Satan is a spirit himself! and those spirits operate now to the "air" of this earth (or universe, anyway
)
Old Testament has Saul calling a dead spirit! the spirit od Prophet Samuel!
hmm all those spirits maybe did not took yet the perfectness without us "received not the promise" yet, but this does not proove those spirits are .. not existing.
