It's the opposite in our house. My husband says, quite frequently, "I know you weren't listening to a word I said. What did I say if you were listening?"

I tried one of my political maneuvers on the "not paying attention".

"You don't understand what I mean when I ask you if you want to go out for dinner?"

I just say that I was looking into her eyes and was so captivated that I was transported to another place and time. It doesn't work, but it gives her more to be upset about and that kind of blunts her attack.
