Re: I Remember When...

I remember having a huge window fan that sucked in air, and you didn't have air conditioning but somehow you still felt cool.

I remember sticking to the wooden pews in church in the summertime. When you stood up, you had to peel your clothing away from the pews.

I remember little bluebird pins that you got for your birthday at church and you put your pennies in the bucket for your birthday years.

I remember my grandpa & grandma's house in the country where there was no indoor toilet until I was 8 or 9, and then you were only allowed to flush if you did more than pee.

I remember helping my grandma make candles and making lye soap, which they used for everything from washing hair to doing laundry in the wringer washer.

I remember when we ran out of toothpaste, we used a rag with salt on it, or baking powder.

I remember always having red patches somewhere on my skin because they thought mercurocome (sp.) or methiolade could cure anything.

Does anyone remember the products: Dusharme (for hair tangles) or Ungentine (an antibiotic spray)??? I can still remember exactly how they smell right now!!

Re: I Remember When...

I remember when I would drink Coke as a kid and burp--if it went out the nose you would swear you were blowing flames! Coke had a bigger bite then.

I remember when New Years came around & when 12:00 came around we would watch times square with the big ball coming down & gather in the middle of the living room to sing Old Lang Sie (sp) & watch the older people weep & cry as they remembered loved ones gone.
As most of that generation is gone, I understand why they wept!

I remember playing Tag on summer nights until past sundown.
"Rusty nails" meant you guessed the wrong person.
"Home free" meant you had won!

One Potato, Two Potato...& Engine Engine number nine going down Chicago Line, if the train goes off the track, do you want your money back?" was used to decide if you were
it or not at the start of the game of tag, or hide and go seek.

Good Memories!

Food always tasted a little more special at Grandma's or Aunt's place?

Re: I Remember When...

We use to go to the Docks to play & there was a train yard (still is today) & the Engineer
saw us three kids and said, "want to go for a ride as I shunted cars around the yard?"
Now I am restricted from that area unless I have business because of Terrorist concerns.

I remember all of those except the bluebird pins and the Dusharme. Is this the Dusharme you remember?

Does anyone remember Rose Bud Salve?...It cured everything.

I remember the lid had a rosebud on it. ...I did a search on this, too and it looks as though it is still in production.

I can't believe you found DuSharme on the web!!!! I had no idea it was still around! I need to order some for Christmas for my sister; I'm sure she hasn't seen it in years. I can still remember the exact feel of that stuff and the smell; isn't that weird? I bet I haven't seen it for 40 years.

Re: I Remember When...

I remember...

... a local TV show on one of the Lousiville, KY stations. (WHAS- Channel 11, maybe?)Don't remember the name of the show but it "starred" Randy and Cactus. Randy was a cowboy and Cactus was a Prospector/Clown. In between cartoons, kids would stand in front of Randy and Cactus and, while waving at the camera, would say, "Hi Mommy, Hi Daddy, Hi, grandma.... and so on". And on. And on. It was the coolest thing! How I wanted to be on that show. Did get to go to the TV station on a school trip and saw Cactus. He wasn't in costume and I was shocked (and a little disallusioned) by the fact that he wasn't a "real" prospector/clown.

Our school had a playground. A baseball field. A basketball court. Trees to climb. A creek to play in. My favorite place to play? The slag pile. A pile of slag from the coal fired furnace. I was "King of the Hill". I was also as black as that slag pile after recess, too!

Anybody remember "Simba" sodas? Kind of like a Mountain Dew or Mello Yello. I think I am the only person on earth who remembers "Simba" with a lion on the label of a green bottle.

I remember going to Lousiville- the BIG city. It was an adventure. Louisville was another world to us. "Come on, kids, get in the car, we're going to Louisville" was like saying "4-3-2-1 LIFTOFF!". We were going to a far away land, to an undiscovered world. Funny. We only lived 12 miles from Louisville. Near Borden, Indiana.
