Re: I Remember When...

I remember merry go rounds and see-saws and tall slides with curves on the playgrounds of schools.

We had to hold on tight when the big boys would spin the merry go round.

My grandma made cherry pies, but they weren't my favorite. They were ok. But she was really known far and wide for her pecan pies. One day I asked Grandma if she would make me a pecan pie. She told me "NO" but then she told me to get the bowl out and the ingredients out and she made me stand there and make that pie myself. To this day, I am the only one of her 67 grandkids who knows how to make pecan pie like Grandma did She gave me a great gift that afternoon.

I make snow ice cream every year with the first measurable snow. My daycare kids can hardly wait each year. The first day we have enough snow to cancel school, we declare that snow ice cream day.

Re: I Remember When...

Do you remember Clark Bars? Those were my favorite candy bar growing up.

I remember when going to McDonald's was a once-a-year treat.

And when going to a Detroit Tiger's Baseball Game was a big deal because you got to go to White Castle for Hamburgers.

I remember walking behind the wagon when they picked corn to pick up what fell to the ground.

And I also remember finding tons of Indian arrowheads in Grandma's fields.

We always had to hoe the gardens at Grandma's. She would tell us to take the weeds and throw them in the walkways and then we'd have to go back thru and rake them out when we were done with a row. Then we'd take those weeds and throw them over for the pigs. One year I decided it made a whole lot more sense if I just let the pigs out to eat the weeds as I was hoeing them. Too bad I didn't consider that weeds are not the ONLY thing that the pigs would eat. I thought my Grandma was gonna tan my hide good for that one!!

How about self-piercing earrings? That's how I pierced my ears. I borrowed a pair of them, put them on and then squeezed for all I was worth till they went all the way through. Hurt like the dickens!! But my ears were pierced when I was done. And since my dad had forbidden me to pierce my ears, that's all I cared. The job was done. Couldn't be undone

I remember when we hunted the roadsides for glass Coke bottles and cashed them in at the food store for 2 cents, and man when we found the big quart Coke bottles it was the jackpot for 5 cents. We did this for candy and toy money.

Re: I Remember When...

I remember when:

Children said "Yes ma'am" or "No ma'am" or "Yes, sir" or "No, sir" to their parents, teachers or anyone older.

A child got a paddling at school, he or she got one at home.

Teachers read the Bible every morning even in a public school and then the students recited the Lord's prayer, along with the teacher.

The worst discipline problems in school were chewing gum, throwing spitballs, or putting chewing gum in someone's hair.

Cakewalks were the highlight of the fall season at school.

Summer seemed to last forever and recess seemed to pass in a blink.

How the new textbooks smelled and how it seemed impossible when looking at our workbooks to think we'd finish them in one school year.

Red Rover was a Scary thing because the big kids were going to try to break the chain where I was holding someone's hand.

I got a dollar for every A on my Report Card and money in my savings account at the end of the year when I passed.

I thought I would never be a teenager and I could never imagine losing my best friend - but now I'm old and I have no idea where my best friend from elementary school is now.

Margie, I remember Clark bars. I remember my first Reece cup and going to McDonald's for the first time.

I'd play my transistor radio in bed listening to the St. Louis Cardinals (and the Beatles) when I was supposed to be asleep.

We had a hamburger stand where we could get a dozen at a really low price.

Every year my maternal grandparents had a huge garden and I helped to "work it"...I helped with the canning and the freezing. We had enough to feed us all winter from the garden and from the pigs we killed about this time of year.

What fun all of that was. It was a different life...A different world.
