Eliphaz appears to have been a descendant of Esau. Esau had a son named Eliphaz who had a son named Teman. This Teman gave his name to a region of the ancient kingdom of Edom (
Habakkuk 3:3).
The presence of apparently historical characters in the story does not mean that the story itself could not have been intended to be understood as a parable. Consider Jesus' reference to Abraham in
Luke 16:19-31; a story that Luke clearly says is one of a series of parables.
I suppose I could insert some cranky comment about folks who haven't bothered to read the Gospel of Luke, but I'm not feeling cranky at the moment.
