Agreed... i've seen it go overboard with a really nasty after-taste for the non-church member family.

Yep. And it's often used to take pot-shots at the "fallen away" Apostolics who will show up at funerals of people they've known all of their lives.

I have you captive here, so I'm going to take the opportunity to tell you what I think of you.

Very poor taste, and that's putting it mildly.

This isn't APF, JP, or your local sectional ministers meeting. Its a place where folks can express their opinions with no fear of retribution and they can do it either anonymously or openly as Jim Yohe and later others meant it to be

Its just the APF/JP folks keep running away to closed forums when the run out of scripture or history to prove their points.

We are glad to have you back

Re: Holy Ghost at a funeral? OF COURSE!!!

I've been to a couple of "going home" services, where it was more like a church service, and it was 100% appropriate. However, that isn't always appropriate, and there ARE times when it's simply manipulating the grieving family in an emotional time. I've NEVER seen it lead to anyone getting saved.

When most of the grieving family are Christians (especially the immediate family), or at least have a history in the church, a service that is focused on the joy of seeing Jesus, and knowing their loved one is in His presence can be very comforting indeed.

One of the "going home" services I went to included people (yes, grieving family members) dancing the aisles and having an otherwise rockin' church service.

Since Dan apparently knows the man who died, and probably is familiar with his family and their culture, let's not jump to the conclusion that he handled anything badly.

Anyone watch the video of Billy Cole's funeral? Not really all that sad, if you ask me. There is a LOT of room for rejoicing at the funeral of a Christian, and it doesn't hurt secular people to be exposed to that concept. Further, there is a lot of benefit to the Christian to be led in worshiping the Lord in a time of sorrow.

I wonder what Paul would have said? Do you think he would have shared the gospel message at a funeral?

Psalm 116:15 "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints."

None of the dictionaries I use (including the Urban Dictionary) agree with you, Renda....

I agree...a funeral shouldn't be a bully pulpit.

If you want a funeral to be an evangelistic opportunity of sorts, then spend your time bonding with the family and assisting with the small things. They'll remember THAT a lot more than the sermon. One of the things that stuck with me when my Dad died was my pastor's wife simply making a pot of coffee and sitting with us. No one really talked. We just had coffee.

I don't even remember the sermons--and there were three of them.
