I'll take the liberty of tweaking your analogy a bit. It's almost like voting in the wrong pastor and wife over and over and over and over again.
The Bible says that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. I believe that this is generally true of human nature but not with politicians. I'm to the point that I need politicians to speak with their actions and decisions.
Allow me to tweak it even further. It is like voting in the same (wrong) pastor over and over and over again.... then criticizing the church across town for doing the same.

And further....we vote them in again and again because the core beliefs, roots or foundation is still what we stand for and believe in - hence we vote them in.
When they get off, in some way, we are always shocked, BUT we still believe in the core, the root beliefs or the foundation and continue doing the same thing - hoping someone will remain true to the core, root or foundation.

I was just surprised by a few things:
a. That this was even on Beliefnet
b. That Carter and Clinton did attend so regularly and get involved.
c. That W and Reagan would not have been much more a part of a church...that was a foregone conclusion to me given the perception.
"Perception" may have been the whole key.
I think the press followed Kerry around, not because he was "religious" in any way, but because they were really hoping to catch a scene where he was refused communion. They'd have loved that. Everybody likes to slam the RCC.
BHO may feel like he got burned a bit at the Chicago church he called "home" for 20 odd years. Better to just sleep in a bit on Sunday and then get the foreign intel briefings out of the way while watching football.
