Culture may enhance it in certain ways, but pretty much I can tell a manly man no matter what culture he's from and vice versa. Manly men are just as obvious in Scotland as they are in the USA. Feminine women are just as easy to spot in India as they are in China.

The outward trappings aren't what make a person truly masculine or feminine, although it certainly contributes. It's more behavioral. The trappings are only reflective of a leaning one way or the other.
No, pretty much culture defines what behaviors are acceptable for boys and girls. That's not saying there aren't physiological "innate" differences.

If it's behavioral, that only further proves that behaviors are learned.

This is the nature vs. nurture, which I don't believe is an either/or but a both/and. However, the list that is featured on this post is definitely ALL culturally defined. Nothing innate there.

Right. Which is why I think that the list, while entertaining, is basically useless. We know a prissy guy by his affinity for feminine behavior--not because he wears a scarf or black-rimmed glasses.

I think culture enhances basic femininity and masculinity, but a lot of it is innate, because we see common threads cross-culturally.

Just to continue the conversation (really only prompting qs here), what is "feminine behavior?" Is this list not examples of such behavior being played out?

In other words, is a guy who is shy also feminine? Is a man who doesn't like sports, but prefers music and arts innately feminine?

I'm not so interested in interests and choices, Jeffrey, as I am personality traits & mannerisms.

We can joke about a guy's music choices, but the truth is a manly man can like Beethoven and a prissy guy can like Led Zeppelin.

I'm not going to make a list, because there are exceptions to rules. You and I both recognize a prissy man or a butch woman when we see one. And often it's a deliberate aberration on their part. e.g., it's not as if they would start acting manly or feminine if they were handed a DO's/DON'Ts list.

Well, I think rather explicit or implicit, we both have a "list" of how we determine what is masculine and feminine. It is surely definable.

I know what you mean by "you just know." But that "just knowing" isn't so metaphysical, it's an unconscious list of criteria in our minds that informs us "this behavior is not acceptable for men" etc.
