The point being - why would God tell a woman to do something that was a SIN.... and not clarify that it was an exception, only to be done for this reason?

He did clarify. This was part of the Nazarite vowl. Not everyone was a Nazarite. Absalom had long hair and look at where it got him. Should we just ignore Paul's teaching?

Oh come on.....long hair wasn't Absalom's problem!

I've often wanted to take the Nazarite vow but no one will take me up on it!

"Long Hair" comes from one word simply means "to wear long hair" or "to let the hair grow". Nothing in the text or the context suggests that to trim the hair is a sin.

  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.

No, we don't ignore it, we study it in context and determine what his intent and meaning was.

And I think we do need to ask ourselves..... if God did not intend for women to cut their hair, why did he not mention it anywhere in the entire Old Testament, including the very detailed instructions in the law? Before Paul wrote his letter, how were women to know they weren't supposed to cut their hair (if that was what he was saying)? He didn't write that letter as if what he was saying to them was something new.

I really do believe that this is something we seriously need to ask ourselves, and not just wave that question away.

Re: Holiness Is Still Important

The children of Israel were captives in Egypt for a long time. We know from historical drawings that Egyptian women did cut their hair.

There were things that the pagans did that God specifically prohibited the Israelites from doing. Trimming the corners of their beard, etc. So, why didn't he mention - 'oh, yeah, and don't cut your hair like those Egyptian women, either!' But, he never mentioned it. In all seriousness, I'm asking - why did God neglect to tell his daughters that he did not want them to cut their hair??

(btw, my perspective comes from someone who has never cut their hair. I just, after *much* study, don't believe it's a sin)

Are you saying that God can't convict people of things?? That only an organization or a church group can give the definitions?? I hope I'm misunderstanding YOU.....

I do know people who have felt called to take the Nazarite vowel.

But friend the point remains....would God instruct a person to commit a sin that would condemn them to hell? logic says "NO". then what about consistency of the text? did God change His mind regarding "hair...the long & short of it"?

Is there even the remote possibility that Paul could have been addressing a question/situation that we are not privy to?

Is it sound theology & hermeneutics to base a heaven & hell doctrine on a single passage?

Or could this maybe be the honest, heart felt conviction of a Godly person...who then pasted it along to others?

"Doth not even nature teach you" should tell you something about this passage. It shouldn't have been an issue, but some were seeking to argue about the matter. That's why Paul said, "We have no other custom that this". Jesus also taught some things that were not mentioned in the Old Test. such as looking upon a woman to lust after her. Need I go on?
