She knew it was not condoned and would not be accepted by the church. She either didn't care what the church thought or did it in spite of the church. I imagine she also knew her husband wouldn't be happy with her decision. Her wearing a bikini has much more to do with sticking it to the church and expressing her new found freedom. Bikini's are something that American women wear to the pool. There is nothing sexual about that.
