I received an invitation to join Facebook from a member here. I generally don't have time to join these kinds of things any more but I was shocked see that Facebook listed others that I might know on Facebook.
The list included the real names of 3 people whom I have met (in person) because of the forums, an attorney who was a mentor when I first got started, my son's girl friend and someone going by a user name that I don't recognize.
So, how does Facebook know who I know? I can't imagine that these people have listed my name and email on their facebook pages.

Puzzled....
Doesn't fb make these connections using your email address/address book? If I sign up for fb, it gives me the option to search for friends using the address book[s] in my gmail, yahoo, aol or hotmail email accounts (+ more, I'm sure).
IOW, anyone you email can become a suggested friend, because fb pulls that info from the addresses in your email account.
Maybe it works in reverse, too. Maybe if someone signs up, allows fb to search for people in their address book, it then makes the same suggestions on the other end as well?
Not sure...just surmising!

I don't think it works in reverse because I have never had my email searched either way...I believe each individual would ahve to initiate it. But, FB's database is very extensive when it comes to you accepting friends and the info you put in about yourself...it can take those simple facts and run a hundred miles in the networking business.

You're probably right--I guess they couldn't do that without permission.
I've found several people I haven't seen in years, some since I was a kid, because they were friends of friends. I ♥ fb!
I don't think fb is the best thing for private people. I suppose you can block everyone and set up your security so it's just your 10 closest friends and family, but that seems to go against the whole concept.

FB figures that stuff out in a few ways, the top being friends of people who you have already accepted as friends, people who list the same specific info like school name and place, and people who join the same groups you join, and by syncing email account info from google, gmail, etc. No one is listing you, FB is connecting the dots by the nfo you and they have entered and the friends you have each acepted.
Most everybody on FB uses their "real names" literally... that's how you connect with people you have not seen in years...every one I know uses their name and most of the ladies include their maiden name. so that's no surprise. The purpose of FB is to connect you...and if you went under some disguise, you'd not be connected with anyone.

Not everyone allows fb to access their address books when it asks to connect them with friends, and not everyone uses their common e-mail in sites like fb.

My account is pretty locked down. I still enjoy it... can't imagine how people who are friends of over a hundred people can deal with the amount of information! Guess it's one more way we're all unique.
