The gift of the Holy Spirit

How do you know when you have received the gift of the Holy Spirit?

The believers in the book of Acts Spirit baptisms were accompanied by the signs of tongues and/or prophesying.

Should we or should we not expect a sign that we have received the Spirit?

In Acts 4:31 how was it known that they were filled with the Holy Ghost?

Mizpeh,
What do you mean by "signs of tongues and/or prophesying?

Are you saying that it is either tongues or prophesying or it could be both?

Acts 2:2-4 says they were filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak in tongues.

Acts 2:17-18 says that God would pour out His Spirit and then our sons and daughters, servants and handmaidens would prophesy. At least that is how I am reading it.

I don't see prophesying as happening without being initially filled as they were in Acts 2:2-4. It's like the age old question - Which came first the chicken or the egg? I say the initial infilling. What Jesus told them to tarry for in Jerusalem.(Acts 1:8)

I think I was on a sabbatical, wasn't I? LOL! Just a habit of sitting down, opening my Twitter account and then running over AFF. I need to fix that habit! LOL!

Re: The gift of the Holy Spirit

My two cents:

The gift of the Spirit is eternal life through Christ (Romans 6:23). The Spirit of life is given to all who obey God (Acts 5:32). All who believe have eternal life (John 3:15-16, John 3:36; John 5:24; John 6:40; John 6:47; John 11:25,26). IMO, speaking in tongues has nothing to do with the reception of life.

Cloven tongues as of fire and the sound of a mighty rushing wind would be nice.

My point is that there is a sign. No one in the book of Acts was silently filled with the Spirit.

The only signs listed in the book of Acts when believers actually were filled with the Spirit were speaking with other tongues and prophecy. And prophecy was never mentioned alone, by itself as a sign after the initial outpouring on Pentecost although prophecy was a sign of the Spirit infilling in the OT and the gospels.

I think we can agree that true believers have eternal life - and it truly is a spiritual gift.

How do you view external evidences of Holy Spirit baptism found in ACTS? Unnecessary? Unique to the Apostolic age?

In particular what about Acts 8

Were these who had recieved the word and were baptized true believers?

What about the sign/s of knowing one is filled? How did they know they were not filled? And how did they know they (atfer prayer) subsequently were filled?

14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

Thanks, Mizpeh. I agree, prophecy did not stand as a sign alone but in evidence with the outpouring of the Holy Ghost in the NT.
