Ted Turner Classics shows it from time to time.

I never miss it. Hope you get to see it sometime.

About the only thing we will watch live is football but even then we like to let it record for 45 minutes to an hour before starting so we can fast forward through as many commercial breaks as possible.

I spend FAR more time at my computer then at the TV (is "TV" even a legitimate word anymore? Sort of like saying "I listen to tapes".)
I second that. Between Netflix and my DVR, I never watch live TV, and hence never watch a commercial. My husband teases me because I always want to hold the remote because I don't think he's fast enough with the skip button (and 2 seconds of a commercial is 2 seconds too much!)

I almost forgot about the remote! For over two years now we've been proud parents, errrr, owners of the Logitech Harmony One universal remote which is simply unbelievable! Easy to program (you do it through the computer via USB) and even easier to use once set up.

Most stories in life revolve around immorality too. Is there any redeeming nature to this sort of visual story-telling? I think so.

I prefer movies about scary villages, though

That is an excellent point. ANY story has an antagonist of some sort whether it be a person, animal, object, or place. Same can also be said for humor: Every joke involves pain and/or embarrassment. There are no funny ones that don't.... In fact the ones that don't usually involve some horrible pun told by an old man over the pulpit which usually solicits groans from the crowd. (Note: Puns are not funny.)

My teenage son loves to watch stuff from The Discovery Channel. We just recently started watching stuff, but he shows little interest in fictional stuff. He prefers to watch "real" things. Extreme sports, historical things.

People have a lot of pre-conceived notions about tv. I know, I had them too.

I can relate. Most of the time I prefer to learn something like history or DIY. But I also enjoy some mindless entertainment like Myth Busters. Still learing but it can be quite entertaining when they take things to the extreme!

He loves Mythbusters. I don't think it's really mindless, either, you can learn a lot!

Re: Can Your Life Be Richer Without TV?

The question is: "Can your life be richer without Television?"

My thoughts are that if you're better off not having your godly affections nailed to the cross, you are indeed better off.

In the mind of man, our affections are our children to which we give birth, nourish and cultivate into strong mature children. Television is the most effective assistant in helping you in that endeavor...so long as they are affections of the flesh such is every lust of the flesh. Viewing the ungodliness on television, whether it is a featured program or even a commercial, is giving consent to it. Consent is a seed that will take root and will become a mature affection at last.

Those who will set their affections (an act of the will) on things above, will have little interest in Television or anything it has to offer.

May I suggest that we give birth to divine affections, nourish and cultivate them making ourselves in spiritual harmony with heaven. It will be hard to get into heaven with lust and depravity in our hearts. In fact, I don't think we would get in at all.

My two and half cents. Keep the change.

Re: Can Your Life Be Richer Without TV?

Let me be clearer on what I mean by immorality.
Anything which is against the Bible's moral standards, I consider immoral.
That would mean sex outside of marriage, homosexuality, murder, rape, I think you get the picture.
Most shows revolve around these topics.
The problem is not so much that they revolve around these topics, but the way in which they portray them.
I also try to watch what I read, either in book form or online.
I have a library of over 3000 books, at last count, of which most have been read by myself or my family.
I am not slamming anyone who has a TV, because, just like a computer, a radio, a book or a magazine, TV is a tool and it's all it how you use it.
I am just more comfortable without one.

I remember reading an article by an apostolic who said if you have magazines, that you wouldn't make it to heaven.
