Congrats, BT. This past Jan. 25th would have been our 16th. Her homegoing was Feb. 6, 2008. For 13 years I was the luckiest man on earth.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Can't say I understand...I've never been through something like that! But from what I see of your post, she was a "lucky lady" for 13 years as well! God speed!

But what he said is a great example of how distorted our interpretation of passages can get -- just to prove a point for our pet doctrines.
Why do you think the son took the money and left his Father's house? What reason (s)?

Definitely not a conservative, authorial intent exegesis. There was an audience, there was a point, there was an emphasis on the story --- and it had nothing to do with the prodigal coming back because he had a change of heart about rules. The irony is that's exactly the elder brother thinking -- not the prodigal.
Do you think the son evidenced any type of repentance upon returning to his father's house? No change of heart whatsoever?

I guess thats one reason I love this forum and the people that were here then. (Many of them are still here). I don't think I could have made it without these folks. They were my Rock. They were right here with me (via AFF) the night she died. They were, are, and always will be my friends. My family. Ok, enough. I've butted into a thread where I shouldn't be. Carry on, friends.

WOW! You bring tears to my eyes! Would like to share a poem with you. You may already have it. If not, I hope it ministers to you. It's called "The Dash!"

The Dash

by Linda Ellis
I read of a preacher who stood to speak
At the funeral of his friend;
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning — to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth,
And he spoke of the following date with tears;
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between the years.

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth,
And now only those who loved him
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own,
The cars, the house, the cash;
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard,
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left...
You could be at “dash-mid-range!”

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real;
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more;
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So, when your Eulogy is being read,
With your life’s actions to rehash...
Would you be pleased with the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

Not sure. It wasn't provided in the story. We can speculate, but there's an obvious meaning to the story that is far more important.

Honestly, mizpeh, I'd think he wanted "cash out." Didn't want to run his father's business anymore. Like Adam and Eve, he bought the lie that God is holding out on him. He's holding him back. There's knowledge outside of him. Like us, the son was rebellious. The man fell just like you and I are born.

Of course. But again, it's not really the focal part of the story.

I would think the true repentance would have been after the Father lavishes him with graciousness and goodness. I'd imagine that would overwhelm anyone with gratitude. Then wasn't interested in working his way up the chain, or even about his job anymore, he was restored in relationship immediately... something he didn't seem to consider.

Re: Prodigal Son Distorted by FB Pastor

I'll say this (on topic)... Could it be that the Prodical Son returned to hs fathers house simply because he had nowhere else to go. I mean he was in a hog pen, you know. Thats about as low as it gets. There was no where else to go. His friends had abandoned him. The 'riotous living" is what brought him to the point that he either "pretended to" or "thought about" eating the hogs slop. How could he have sunk so low? Where else could he turn but to a father that loved without condition. Without condition. Now theres a thought. So, if the son did rebel against rules, the father loved him anyway. If, in fact, the son just wanted to experience life beyond the fathers house, the father's unconditional love reached out for him and accepted him back. He didn't have to "earn" his fathers love... it was his unconditionally.

Notice that the father didn't accept him back on the condition that he abide the rules. He loved him, and accepted him, without condition, just as God loves and accepts us.

I'm not sure where said pastor got this from, and it completely disregards the entire context of the Story. The rule-abiding Pharisees were being rebuked (they were the rule-abiding elder brothers in the story), but somehow the parable is about how valuable rules are? Really?

The Story of the lost son is about a God who loves recklessly and even shamefully. I wrote about this recently (http://apostolicfriendsforum.com/sho...56&postcount=6).

It's amazing to me that such a beautiful story can be twisted in such a way as to make people believe it was about 'rules.' The fact is, we are all that prodigal who rebelled against God. What our exact motivations were are no mystery: selfishness, trusting our way better than God's way. The prodigal didn't come back to make right with God. He came back because it was economically feasible for him. However, before he could get out his scheming, the father was running for Him, throwing himself on him, and ordering up a party. This is Grace.
As I often say... there's a difference between letting the word speak and making the word talk.
