I think "some here" would just tend to not be as harsh in their criticisms of the RCC practices as you have been. There are many good Catholic arguments that would show that the practices of that church which you proscribed do not allow idolatry in any event.

See for example: http://www.catholic.com/thisrock/qui...yword/idolatry

Of course, what it all comes down to is the intentions and conditions of the individual's heart. That is what we will all be called to account for in the end.

God was pretty harsh towards idolatry. I grew up catholic so it's notm against people but the religion itself.

But why are you saying that all Catholics participate in idolatry? Did you worship the statues and other art work? Don't feel that you have to answer that, but I too was raised Catholic. I was instructed rather closely as a child until I was about eleven.

I took the instructions seriously; so seriously that when I became convinced that they deviated from the Bible I rebelled against my own Catholicism - as an eleven year old kid. But, at no time did I ever "worship" an image or statue nor was I ever instructed to do so.

When you look at the RCC's actual teachings you see that they do not teach idolatry. I do know that there are many Catholics around the globe who hold processions and other events that at least give the appearance of idolatry, and you hear many Catholics speaking as though their religious experience involves idolatry.

But I don't think it's fair to say the whole institution is "idolatrous." That accusation will ring hallow with most American Catholics. Let's "get them" at the points where we know they err and not lump disparate cultures from around the globe into one unwieldy mass - In fact, that's what the RCC has historically tried to do and we can call them on that.

I too was raised RC until the age of 12. The only idol worship I remember was the near-worship of the holy Rosary. I often heard stories of it being used to ward off evil in the home -both spiritual and physical, and how it was draped over someone suffering from illness only to have that person healed. Or even how it would be clutched in a death grip as a method to try and convince God to answer your prayer.

Yes, the RC DID practice idolatry!

I can only imagine how God feels with all this banter about who's saved and who's not - Lord forgive us.

Luke 6:37 (King James Version)

37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

All course not, let the fornicators run wild in the church

And go ahead and tear 1 Corinthians 5 out of your Bible...

Paul did list those who would not enter. Judging!

I've never suggested tearing it out of the Bible. I also temper that with Galatians 6. Reading the Bible as a rule book, without first understanding it from a hermeneutic of "what did this mean?" "what was going on?" is how we get such flawed views of scripture.

Fornicators are in every church. Now... "running wild" is a different story.
