Hoovie - I understand what you are talking about and I agree that "things" have changed and not just people. Media has played a HUGE part in that. Please realize that I am NOT condemning anyone for participation in such an outlet. I just found it interesting that this concept wasn't even mentioned. For those of us that have roots in this, coming from a time when kids didn't even participate in Little League or Pop Warner Football or the soccer program - much less high school competitive sports - I found it interesting that no one commented on it.
Quite possibly because it's a broken record that's been repeated over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and...well, you get the point...

Just sayin'...
You are probably right! I shouldn't have even brought it up.

Yeah, a lot of us grew up hearing participating in sports, or watching, listening to entertainment were sins.

No, I think you made a good point. Some of us didn't hear it often, but it was just a given.

I am amazed at some of the thought processes here. All the comments have been regarding the fact that it was Madonna they were asked to sing with. (And I totally agree with the fact that they shouldn't participate with her.)
If it had been some other secular artist that is not quite so ??? (you fill in your description), would you have been okay with it? (i.e. Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, etc. etc)
My, my how things have changed! It was just a few short years ago, singing at the Super Bowl wouldn't have been considered at all - no matter WHO they were backing up. It would have been wrong to be at the football game. It could have been George Beverly Shea, The Gaithers, or whoever else and it would have been SIN. I kept waiting on CC1, Steinway, Renda, Ferd or someone like that to mention this, but I guess they aren't going to. I just found it interesting that no one commented on that.
Disclaimer: I am NOT saying I think it would be sin, just that it wouldn't have even been a consideration for a UPCI Bible College to participate in something like this.
Wouldnt have been me Sweet Pea. I grew up in a UPCI church. But I also played basketball for my school and little league baseball and we made trips to houston to watch the Astros play. I got to see Nolon Ryan pitch as a kid....
We had television all those years too. it wasnt a big deal. Still isnt.
And I have long said, that this attempt to avoid everything like the plague creates immature Christians anyway.
You teach people right and wrong. You teach people to listen to the voice of God in their own lives and you make sure they understand doctrinally that Santification isnt about not having a television but it is about what you feed your mind. (as one example).
mature christians that have TVs dont watch things that are bad for their minds and their spirits. immature christians never grasp that. they wont watch Food network but they will read a smutty romance novel and feel they are holy. its crazy.
I wont even get started on sports etc.....
I will say I am happy to see so many christians on AFF staking out the position that singing at the Super Bowl might be a good thing but singing with Madonna would certainly NOT be such a good thing.

I disagree! you made a good point and it is worth exploring!
I agree it's worth exploring. I am very interested in allowing grace for those who were hardcore anti-everything so they can mature into a life that is truly Spirit led.

I am a firm believer in the Old Paths

I have no problem at all that you, Sweet Pea, mentioned it. It's probably easy for a few on here to figure out just where I came from prior to where I am now. No, I have "not arrived." But, I've seen P-L-E-N-T-Y of differences along the way, some for the good and others not so much so; for some and probably many, I've witnessed the results of extremisms, and it had a tendency to provoke extremism the opposite way...
From my experience, when a certain select few (elderly or lifetime "saints") ran the show, what else were we to hear? "I just miss the good old days when...(insert doctrinal/standards wording here)" I think the picture is clear...
For those who didn't get to or have to hear it (the broken record) all the time, consider yourself a little more blessed...
Who knows? IBC may be able to minister in other ways that will reap far greater benefits than singing with Madonna. I'd much rather see them compete on "How Sweet The Sound" any day, in all honestly...
