I went to my senior prom in 1995. Lots of dancing. There was some "dirty dancing", but not much. Teachers present frowned upon it and broke a couple or two up. Most girls would think you were a creep if you did more than hold their hands or their waste. No heavy petting, but I admit that I did "steal a kiss". lol It was a school dance, so no alcohol.
My girlfriend's parents wanted her home after the prom. I did the whole drive her home, say goodnight, and gave her a kiss goodnight.
The problem isn't the prom, as I see it. It's the "after prom parties" that PARENTS allow their kids to go to. Most aren't sufficiently supervised. Kids have no place attending those parties.
The secret is being an involved parent who says "no" to real dangers, and "yes" to those things that are just part of growing up, and telling the difference.
Just for the record, how many of you attended prom?

Kids need to interact with one another in social environments in order to learn how to develop maturity and poise. Frankly, no matter what you think of the High School dance, a good church-style gathering where no one is ostracized or a social outcast would do most kids a world of good.

Sounds like a dinner date with entertainment. Not a bad idea. I think it's a great alternative.
I like this. As a parent, I don't want to take something away or deny involvement in something and not offer an enjoyable alternative. I think a normal kid will just begin to envy the unsaved if you don't.

Bingo. Parental interest and involvement is the key.

Re: dances/prom??
I attended my junior and senior prom. I see no harm in it, personally - I didn't dance and neither did my date. In fact, we left the dance early and came back to my house and hung out with my family.
As many have stated, kids get drunk/have sex/etc before or after prom - not during. As long as you know where your kids are, it should be a relatively harmless situation.

Re: dances/prom??
A bigger question is, would you shun a just-married couple who did a dance at their reception? (This is assuming the reception was NOT in the church basement and the music was not limited to such great hits as "I'm a Pentecostal!".)

Are talking about the song released by CLC? I thought that I liked that song until I heard the whole thing. By the end I was disgusted enough that I would be happy to never hear the song again. I prefer some of the other songs that we have had when discussing ourselves.

Re: dances/prom??
I got saved in my senior year of HS, so Christianity was fresh and new to me, and honestly I had no desire to attend my prom (a bunch of Christian friends and I who were graduating seniors dressed up and went for a nice meal at a restaurant instead.) Walking along the streets that night, we worshipped God and danced in the spirit. To this day, I don't think I missed anything. I didn't go to any of the senior class events: senior trips, sleepaways, etc and have no regrets in the least. I suppose it might be different for someone who was raised up in an apostolic church, though.
