Re: Common Myths about Gay Christians

2 Samuel 1:26

King James Version (KJV)

2 Samuel 1:26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

I know some people who genuinely believe that the Scriptures allow for long-term, committed same-sex relationships. They have studied all of the relevant Bible passages (Sodom, Leviticus, Romans 1, 1 Cor. 6, etc.), and have come to the conclusion that same-sex behavior is not inherently wrong in a certain context. Many of these people are very conservative theologically when it comes to other biblical issues.

Do I consider them heretics because of their position on the issue of homosexuality? Actually, no. Or at least, not necessarily.

I think there are other more important doctrines that they need to believe. (For example, Jesus is the only way to God, salvation by faith alone, etc.). I consider many of these "more liberal" Christians (in regards to sexual ethics) my brothers and sisters in Christ, even though we may disagree here.

I just got finished reading articles from both sides of the "Great Debate" about homosexuality. Side A was written by Justin Lee who believes the Bible allows "same-sex marriage." And Side B was written by Ron Belgau who believes that same-sex attracted Christians are called to celibacy or hetero marriage.

Honestly, I find myself firmly agreeing with the Side B position, but I can still see that this is a very nuanced debate. I think it's important to always research all sides of an issue. Dialogue is essential. We should not be afraid of truth. It always prevails.

If you're interested, you can read both sides of the debate here: http://gaychristian.net/greatdebate.php
So, you believe that there is room for sincere Christians to disagree on the issue as with the Rapture?

Most would agree that the verse above only illustrates that the friendship between David and Jonathan was like brothers, deeper than any friendship David could have with a woman.

However, I'm aware that there are some other texts involving David and Jonathan, including an accusation against Jonathan made by Saul, that raise an eyebrow among theologians and some linguists.

Yes. I think so.

I hope you can see what I'm saying. While I agree with your overall premise... it's the application of that premise that I feel is unwaranted. Do I walk around "correcting" believers who say, "I'm a gay Christian. I know God can save those caught up in that lifestyle."

In my opinion, no. Instead of getting into a battle of wording... I'd like to pray with them about their friends and family who might need prayer.
I think we simply speak the truth in love. It doesn't have to be a "battle of wording", because the wisdom from above is easy to be intreated. I'm a firm believer in the Scriptures being able to sell itself when it is presented in love and wisdom.

Re: Common Myths about Gay Christians

Amen.
I am offended by "Gay Christian," but I note that I am directed to be slow to take offense. I'm thinking that God doesn't need me to defend my idea of Christianity, to anyone.

Also, I see that time and again, God chooses the rejected for His work. I would hate to find myself in the position of the Pharisees/Sadducees, fighting God and sure of my position. I'm wondering how closely the "abomination" described in Scripture even resembles our current day gays, as I have seen major differences in definition for other terms, "slave" for instance. I find no ref's for gays wanting to find God in Scripture-none, and wonder if I'm "helping" them remove an eye mote, lol.

I am now convicted that I am fighting God, here. Ty, Aquila.

Do some very deep studies on what kinds of people were classified as eunuchs in ancient times. Writings from ancient Rome indicate that eunuchs were men who were castrated by choice or punishment, born deformed - in addition to being capable males who had no "lust for women" (sometimes noted from birth). They were often despised, abused, and used as objects by Roman men. Some classes of eunuchs were trusted to guard and attend to royal wives. Many are known for even speaking softly as women in natural tone. Also study the lifestyle of the average centurion and their male servants.
