The purpose was before everyone starts talking about the bloodthirsty Muslim Iranians, understand he was in an extremely anti Christian country preaching the gospel. And I'm sure he knew the laws and customs. It isn't America.
Ignorant: Lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated or unsophisticated.
This wasn't ignorance, this was reality.
