Re: What can you NOT do?
If I tried to serve something like that to my family, they would go on a hunger strike immediately!

Re: What can you NOT do?
One of the most terrible tasting things I ever had to eat as a child were cabbage rolls. I can't remember what was in them, but they were cooked in the oven and the cabbage had some type of awful tasting stuff inside, with tomato juice poured over them. Oh, it is making me sick again, just thinking about them... I never liked cabbage until my Mother-in-law cooked cabbage ... slow cooked with butter, bacon and salt... mmmhmm.
Thinking about those "noodles" some of you mentioned... seems like we also grew up on Tomato soup, RandyWayne. We would eat it for lunch with crackers, and for supper on cabbage rolls or with macaroni... ughhh.... so glad southern cooking came my way!!!!

I can't say I was that bad off... we had lots of fresh veggies from our garden, and my mom baked the most awesome homemade bread 10-12 loaves at a time. We actually thought it was a treat growing up to eat store bought bread!!! We ate out at a restaurant maybe once or twice a year, and we really had it good because we ate food out of our garden, and meat from a neighbor's cow who butchered twice a year... and so we always had plenty of good food to eat...
I don't mean to cast a bad light on all the cooking in the north... but there are a few dishes that stand out in my mind as just being downright horrible... lol!

Re: What can you NOT do?
Cabbage rolls rings a bell....
Mom would make something like that. She would take hamburger meat, mix bread and rice, a bit of milk and onion, roll them into balls and wrap cabbage around them, pour tomato juice on them after they have cooked a bit.
It was not bad as compared to some of the stuff we had to eat...esp duck soup...(don't ask).
Mom made potato pancakes for supper too. This was better than some because she allowed us to sprinkle sugar on them.

Eww, duck soup... yes, I won't ask!
Potato pancakes are yummy, if they are cooked with salt

I'm with you on that one, Matt. Potatoes are just plain nasty. I can eat them baked as long as I have a bite of skin with every bite. and TONS of butter and salt. Still not a fan of french fries. Maybe I'll eat 2 or 3, but that's it. no more than that. I do however like fried potatoes fried in tons of butter and cooked VERY brown.
Busha always made duck blood soup. It was DISGUSTING! Seriously!! and then, I hated milk, so I couldn't wash it down with that. And she had egg water at her house, so even the kool-aid was rotten. What's a kid to do????
However, her cabbage rolls were fabulous! I still make those. Hamburger meat, rice, onions, LOTS of seasonings. Then take your cabbage and par boil it enough to make each leaf pliable. Wrap it around the meat mixture, then make a MIXTURE of tomato sauce, brown sugar, salt, pepper and other SEASONINGS!. Bake until done. Pigs in the Blanket. YUM!! I have people who beg for them!
