Re: So Much Hurt On This Forum
Here's the question.
Because of the pain and hurt has it pushed you to no longer believe what you once believed?
Has that pain dictated your beliefs?

Nope.
Still believe like I always have - just gave up a few of the man-made rules once it was obvious they were man-made.

I was thinking about this - it's kind of like the fact that I like going home to my mother's (the home I grew up in). There's something about holding onto those roots. But that doesn't mean I want to live there anymore. So I love coming HOME here to visit my Apostolic family - but I don't care to live there anymore. Make sense?

LOL! Makes absolute sense, Margie!

No, this is a misconception that many repeatedly (and mistakenly, I might add) make.
I no longer believe what I once believed because my beliefs have changed. It has nothing to do with the pain and hurt and abuse I went through.

To be honest, I did have some extremely "surface" beliefs where I thought a certain way simply because I was told to do so. I've condemned my fair share of women to eternal torment for wearing pants in my early teen years even while not understanding WHY I was doing that other than being told to.

In my case, to begin with I didn't leave because of pain and hurt. I had great experiences in the Apostolic church and met some of my best friends there - people who are STILL my best friends.
But have my beliefs changed because I left? Interesting question. First of all, my beliefs have actually not changed at all.
My beliefs on standards have changed drastically however. Well, actually, that's not true. I never believed the standards even when I was in the Apostolic church. I followed them because I had to in order to be allowed to be involved. But I always thought that, for the most part, they were simply either control issues or plain old bunk.

I never believed them either.
But, I have to say that I don't look down on them for being careful with what they see or have been taught. My husband was raised COG and they taught the same thing. I ran into an elderly women, some years ago, who upon seeing my daughter stopped us to compliment her and leaned closer to me and said, "I was raised a Baptist. When I was growing up we wore dresses and never cut our hair. My children make me do it today because, it's easier for them to take care of me." I was a little surprised she said that.

Would you still believe like you once believed had you not gone through what you went through regarding the UPC?

I have never done this. Even in the 16 years I lived as an Old Order Mennonite. I can't understand why anyone feels that necessary or in any way productive.

I think that would make her Catholic. LOL! Perhaps you are over thinking this...?
