Tazed Church Tambourine Player (L)

There are a few over-zealous tambourine players I would have loved to have seen this done to.... or at least an electric cattle prod....

Re: Tazed Church Tambourine Player (L)

There have been a few times I would have loved to tasered somebody playing the tambourine. Few things are as obnoxious as one or more people in an audience "helping" the band along with loud tambourine playing.

I know it is said to be worship but it is so obnoxious and draws so much attention to the person doing it (while taking away from the music) I have a hard time ascribing pure motives to most people who insist on doing this.

It had been many years since I had to listen to some goofy tambourine in an audience but a few months ago a lady visiting our church brought hers with her and went to town on it during praise and worship. It was very distracting. Luckily she only did it two services.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

See, now I don't mind it if they know how to play a tambourine. When I would preach back in the day at a Church of God in Christ, you'd have at least a dozen of them in the place, and they all knew how to play it. I even saw one young lady pick one up... and when she couldn't play it to please the older sister next to her, it was taken away and demonstrated properly. So, I love a tamborine... but only when done right... and unfortunately, many of the ones in the white churches don't have a clue of what "played right" is.

I don't doubt that there are some people out there who enjoy the sound of a dozen different tambourines playing at the same time. I would venture to guess though that you are few and far between. You might also try setting up some chalkboards in the sanctuary and urge people to run their fingernails over them. If you like a dozen tambouoines playing you very well might enjoy group chalk board scratching! That all of that tambourine playing will hinder more people in getting something from a service than help.

My favorite tambourine story is one told to me by a boss I had while in Bible College who was a backslidden UPC Pentecostal. He told me about when he was in church visiting a local independent OP church pastored by a woman (who turned out to be gay , another story!).

He said that this was one of those tambourine playing churches with fast loud music and quite a few tambourine players giving it all they had. He said that during a particularly fast song one player had banged and shook their tabmourine so hard it came apart and those little round discs of medal went flying everywehre. I have this mental picture of this killer tambourine t hat brings a smile to my face when I think about it!

This person had some kind of medical / mental problem at the root of her behavior.

Seems to me it could have been handled differently.

So we want to taze the mentally disabled?
I guess it's ok as long as it's done outside of the church, and not inside the church?
