For Unpaid College Loans, Feds Dock Social Securit

More retirees are falling behind on student debt, and Uncle Sam is coming after their benefits.

Sounds fair to me. Too many people treat student loans as something less than a serious obligation. should be the same as a home mortgage or car loan. If you forfeit - lose the degree.

I disagree. Sometimes it's hard for graduates to find a job that pays enough to repay the loan and have enough left for rent and other necessities. Getting an education costs too much.

It is a bit more complicated than that. Government loans have forced the cost of tuition through the roof, now it is almost a necessity for a student to take out loans. And unlike other unsecured loans you can't get out of these, short of death.

I know that loans have forced tuition through the roof and that you can't declare bankruptcy on these but WHY have they forced tuition through the roof? What is the cause and effect here?

Because the higher the government raises the limits on these loans the higher the tuition goes, not as a result of normal supply and demand but as an artificial government push of prices. If students attended college based on scholarships and cash on hand the supply of students would be lower or the cost of tuition would have to be lowered to meet the actual abilities of students.

Yes, that's what I thought. I read not to long ago where our local chancellor of a fairly small college was getting about $345,000 a year in salary. When I read things like that and then they say tuition is going through the roof and the colleges talk about how we all have to make sacrifices to keep tuition low, it sounds like a crock.

But tuition going up is because the government broke the normal laws of supply and demand. Got it. Makes sense. Thanks.

If you run a college, and you know that if you raise tuition the Gov will always provide enough in loans to meet that tuition...why not raise it and get that good ol Gov money?

I have a feeling that if the Fed cut the amount of money available to students for loans in half, you would see tuition drop dramatically.
