In many nations on Earth women STILL wear veils. Up till 150 years ago I would say practically all AMERICAN women covered their heads in Church tho many times with a hat rather than a veil. At least they understood their heads were to be covered.

When I was a little girl going to Roman Catholic Church, we never entered the doors without a veil.
Momma made sure my sister and I wore something on our heads, even if it was just a small lacy veil.
