Re: Calling on the Name of the Lord

Jesus is the High Priest of the whole world, He became the Lamb, that takes away the sins of the whole world.
When the high priest, under the law, offered the sin offering, ALL of Israel's sins were covered. Of course, for it to be most effective, each individual had to believe and live knowing they were covered, if not, they would still live condemned like the were lost. But their sins WERE covered whether they believed or not. Yet in a sense they were lost, because they didn't embrace their privilege.

Same is true, of those that do not believe and live in the knowledge of the effective of HIS sacrifice, they live as a condemned individuals. Yet, His blood still paid for their sins. That is why BELIEF is so important!!!

Notice the keyword in the sentence. AND. Believes AND is baptized. You can not be saved with out being baptized. That word and is KAI. It can be said as AND or EVEN. So let us read it in a different manner.

"Whoever believes, even baptized, will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned."

So you could equate Baptism in Jesus Name as believing on Jesus Christ for Salvation.

Either way you look at it, to be saved you MUST be baptized to be saved.
So, when a person is baptized in the name of Jesus their sins are remitted?

Remitted means forgiven. There is no more penalty for those sins because the blood has been applied.

Odd then, because I'm pretty sure you are going to tell me that baptism isn't enough just like faith isn't enough.

I'm sure you're going to tell me that a person who trusts in Jesus and is baptized is still going to go to Hell if he or she doesn't speak in tongues.

If that's the case baptism doesn't really remit sins at all.

Those of you who don't think baptism is anything more than an 'outward show of solidarity' and that it is NOT for the remission of sins, why don't you publicly repudiate your baptism? Why not forgo baptising anyone, anymore? (Hey, the Quakers did just that, didn't they?)

What does this mean?

By "calling" are we referring to mere vocalization, or must something else be attached to the plea for salvation to the name?
Along with that question we should also ask, HOW does God save those who call on his name? The verse does not say that calling on God's name saves us, it says that whosoever calls on him SHALL be saved.

In a sense , yes. We seldom think of Peter's command in Acts 2:40..."Save THYSELF from this untoward generation".

Romans 10:
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Someone needs to show me explicitly where the scripture says that mere belief and confession alone remits sin.

"If you believe in Christ you shall receive the remission of sins," does not suggest that a sinners prayer, belief in God, or even repentance alone actually IS the remission of sins. We are baptized FOR the remission of sins. When we believe in Christ we'll do what he says do, we will follow his word and will be baptized and that baptism is our remission. "He that believeth and is baptized..."

The belief sets us up for the remission, but it does not remit our sins. It does not wash our sins away on it's own. Baptism truthfully doesn't either because baptism is done based upon our faith. No faith no remission. No baptism no remission.

The real question is if we don't reach out and take the lifeguards hand, are we committing suicide?

Re: Calling on the Name of the Lord

Paul told us clearly in Titus 3:5 what SAVES us.....

"He SAVED us BY washing of rebirth and renewing of the Holy Ghost"

But in order for us to be a vessel that the Spirit of God to dwell in and regenerate, we must deal with our sins. Christ paid our sin debt in full at Calvary. His blood satisfied the demands of God's justice so that his wrath can be turned away from us! We SUBMIT to this righteousness bought by Christ's blood by repenting. An important part of repenting is burying our sinful members with Christ in the waters of baptism (or "in his name"). Thus we, as Paul said, stop going about trying to establish our own righteousness. With our full trust and faith in Christ's righteousness and sacrifice, God is able to reside on the inside of through the indwelling Holy Ghost baptism, thus SAVING us, as Titus 3:5 states. That's the gospel in a nutshell.

Mark 16:16....He who believes and is baptized SHALL be saved (by washing of rebirth and renewing of the Holy Ghost)

Acts 2:38..."Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost"(which bring the washing of rebirth and renewal or regeneration)

Romans 10:9-10.."For if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus Christ, and believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (by washing of rebirth and renewing of the Holy Ghost)
