The full context of I John draws a distinction between those who "continue" in sin, "abide" in sin and those who because of their humanity fall on occasions. It's the practicing of sin, the continuing in sin, it's the abiding in sin that damns the soul. John also says in
I John 2:1-2 "My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin.
But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
It's an acknowledgement that Christians sin. No one is perfectly obedient. It's why we all need God's grace. When Jesus died He didn't die just for my past. He died for all of my sins, past, present, future. It's not a license to go ahead and sin, no because one who is born of God does not abide or continues in sin. But I can assure I most certainly will sin again between now and standing before Jesus face to face. I live in security knowing that I have an Advocate with the Father pleading my case and reminding the Judge that my fine has been paid in full.
