Re: Banished!
ILG... all I can say is... wow, my family and I just watched the two videos you posted. My kids were amazed at how a little bit of truth mixed with a whole lot of pride and judgmentalism was used effectively to control the minds of people.
A lot of the rhetoric found spewing from the Phelps family is so similar to the same "I'm better than you" because "I'm holier than you" stuff that is found on a certain standard thread going on right now. The idea that because "I do this, or don't do that" that I am somehow better than all of you. And the mind control games these people play remind me of the same type of rhetoric that I heard growing up in ultra-con churches. I haven't thrown the baby out with the bath water, but I have seen through all the hate-filled, judgmental rhetoric that is presented with a little bit of truth to somehow validate all they do.
I pray that these people of Westboro would truly experience the love and mercy of God in their lives and leave the judging up to one true Judge.

We are honestly scared, not only in our now-apparent lack of salvation, but in the culture shock as well. However the one thing that we feel completely open & welcome in doing is asking questions.
I'm not saying anything to discredit you, as we are misfits-what do we honestly know being new to UPC, but simply saying this is not always the case.

I was in the UPC for 19 years. When you are first getting in, they are happy to answer all your questions but if you disagree with their answers, you are going to hell. If you question them later, you are going to go to hell. That's a little blunt, but it's true about certain questions, definitely.
Also, Hoove, you came from a culture where questions were probably even less tolerated than in the UPC. The UPC was probably a breath of fresh air to you.

Yes, I think the main similarity is the mind control techniques. They are not the same doctrinally but the same logic is behind the thinking. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Congrats! I have a ton of friends in the UPC. Sure, there are some power-hungry people, but the overwhelming majority are great, sincere and loving people.

The comparison of the WBC to the UPC is absurd, IMO.

How many UPC churches did you attend in those 19 years?
