Re: Living "unmarried" SO Baptism then Marriage or
Some that I knew in the past would advise that you separate, marry (civil marriage), and then come back together.
However, Paul addressed unmarried couples who had trouble controlling themselves. Paul's advice wasn't that they separate. Paul wrote...
1 Corinthians 7:8-9
English Standard Version (ESV)
8 To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single as I am. 9 But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
An unmarried couple that are having trouble controlling their desire for one another shouldn't be separated. They should be scheduled to marry. Paul has some real practical advice. So... get "married" (private or civil).

I'd get baptized first and then contend with any sin or temptation as it comes. After all... isn't that what we do in every other area of life?
but how can we be born again, washed of our sin if knowingly still living in sin? How can we testify that we are at that point born again when we know better scripturally?
hmmmm just seems rather baptistict to just go ahead with it

Yes, but we have to look at the social factor as well among the Church itself...
To resolve this, for 6wks the summons for the divorce will be published in the paper for 6wks. (in a very small gossip town at that)
So.. socially, what does that show to others of the Church? That we are baptized but then out comes this in the paper? I fear this could hinder another's (something)....
I fully agree with what you said as to be married (behind the curtan) by the pastor first, I agree that would set us right with God. I also mentioned this to our main Church contact, and he agreed with you as the best route.

Newbie, I applaud your maturity. It is true that "Gods Eyes" are the only eyes that matter.... BUT your CARING for the souls of others, by your careful approach is worth applauding.
I am praying for you. I fully believe that your care and concern for your own soul, and that of your future wife... AND for the souls of those you influence by your decisions are in good hands.
kudos!

So we are talking about 2 people getting married in the eyes of GOD here right?
Do we really care about the eyes of the state?
What did people do before there was a state to recognize their marriage?
So back to Newbie...
Hey Newbie, I have a very important question for you.
Do you and the person you live with have the same belief system? Are you both now committed to Jesus in the same way? Go the same church? have the same conviction?
The following advice is based on YES being the answer to the question(s) above.
You need to avoid fornication. that is the sin. You need to "flee" putting yourself in a position to be tempted. That is also potentiallu sinful.
Now how do you do that?
My view is that what you need to do is be married in the eyes of God. That can be accomplished (again in my humble opinion) without state ratification.
If the two of you are going to church together, share the same faith, have committed in your hearts to one another, and are fully prepared to commit to each other in a covanant relationship with God, then it seems to me, you need to get with you pastor and get that done.
4 months from now, sign some legal documents that square you with the state but get yourself square with God now.
That can be done today if your pastor is ameniable....
if he is not, please discount all i just said and proceed as your pastor directs...
Does the bible require 'state sanction' for a marriage to be valid? God ordained marriage before he ordained 'the state'. He also said NOT A SINGLE THING about 'preachers performing marriages'.

^^^ Thanks for the kind words

After 8 years in you'll see it's not nearly such a pressing issue as the first two.
