Re: Noah and the Ark
Throw out the whole Bible, folks! NFS, with his impeccable YouTube videos, has proven it's all a bunch of fairy tales!
Some supreme being called "God" created everything ... Fairy Tale
Noah and the Ark ... Fairy Tale
Samson ... Fairy Tale
David and Goliath ... Fairy Tale
Some virgin impregnated without sexual intercourse ... Fairy Tale
There is no God. There was no Word made flesh, whose name was Jesus. There were no miracles, such as the loaves and fishes; no Lazarus or Jarius' daughter being raised from the dead. There was no crucifixion, resurrection or ascension.
Bible burning, anyone?

I have come into this thread quite late, so if you have already answered this, please bear with me and repeat it or direct me to the post.
Let's say you are correct. What do you think that mythical story means in the Bible, and what happened to the real or mythical people who may or may not have existed prior to that story?

Religion...You are in a Religion. All of them say what you say, do what you do, and act like you act. Good job for being, Religious!
But Religion is just that; Religion. Nothing more, nothing less, than beliefs based upon unfounded evidence by people who make up ideas about things they've never validated.
That, my friend, is living in deceit.

Many years back I read a book, I don't remember what it was called, it could have been by Rob Bell, or Brian McLaren, and It really helped me to put Bible stories into (what I think is) a proper perspective. They were speaking specifically of Adam and Eve and the garden and he asked "Which matters more, that it happen ed or that it happen s?"
So rather than spending my time trying to prove (or disprove) that something in the Bible literally happened, I ask instead: "What is the story saying? What does it mean? What can it teach us?"

I do believe in past stories that represent a Great Flood of some kind, like the tsunami that pummeled Japan and Indonesia.
But just imagine that happening 5000 years ago. Embellishing stories like these would happen, as modern forms of discovery did not exist.
Galileo Galilee, and his observations of our Solar System is a perfect example of how time and history has changed, via the discovery of the facts.

Good points to ponder. The Bible is one of the greatest Books on Earth because it is the Face of Man. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. We can learn about ourselves and even develop a Government with the Bible.
But notice this: you can swear on the Bible in Court, but you cannot use Spectral Evidence in Court. So even Society understands the ramifications of allowing unproven evidence to condemn the innocent, like the Salem Witch Trials.

I do that with parables and even other allegorical stories, but I don't know what lesson is learned if the flood is a parable.

Not in religion. It's a relationship. And no amount of hot air you blow, no YouTube video you post will ever dissuade me from my relationship with Jesus Christ.

I do believe that some happenings might not be accurate. In regard to the flood, I have always been puzzled as to the mention of the rainbow being placed in the sky as a sign that God would never flood the earth again. We know from history that earth has been flooded in certain areas throughout time, however, a rainbow cannot be 'placed'. In fact, it was still raining when they saw the rainbow, so that makes even less sense to me.
I believe the earth was flooded. However, I don't believe the earth existed as it is today. I believe land was one massive area, not separated into continents as they are today. I also believe that the flood started the separation of land into continents that occurred over the last 6+ thousand years. Or longer.
I was actually curious as to whether or not you believed Noah even existed or if anyone else did either.
